The Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade Garrison in Natsinta Cantonment Katsina State, has effected a change of command with Lieutenant Colonel M. Hamadikko formally handed over the leadership of the Brigade to Lieutenant Colonel R. Wikimor.

Lieutenant Colonel Hamadikko, who assumed command on February 22 2024, leaves behind what officers described as a period of strengthened operational posture and improved internal administration Within his two years stewardship, the brigade garrison provided sustained security coverage across about ten local government areas of Katsina State, reinforcing the Army’s presence in communities threatened by banditry and related crimes.

Hamadikko led intelligence driven and clearance operations that dismantled criminal enclaves and restored military dominance over critical terrains. Notably, the brigade successfully captured and secured the Zango and Pauwa hills, strategic high grounds previously exploited by bandit groups as staging points for attacks on surrounding settlements. The recovery of these areas disrupted criminal movements and contributed to a noticeable reduction in threats within the brigade’s area of responsibility.

His command approached emphasised persistence, coordination and adaptability. Troops maintained constant patrols, strengthened forward operating bases and improved collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders. These measures enhanced early warning systems and promoted safer movement for residents, traders and commuters across several flashpoints corridors.

Hamadikko placed premium attention on the administration, discipline and welfare of officers and soldiers. He improved internal management processes, prioritised training and ensured better care for personnel, recognising that morale and professionalism are essential to sustained operational success. His leadership style fostered unity of purpose and accountability within the brigade garrison.

At the formal handover on January 26 2026 Hamadikko acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of officers and men under his command and urged them to sustain higher standards of performances in the collective tasks of securing Katsina State. His message underscored teamwork and continuous improvement rather than personal achievements.

The incoming commander, Lieutenant Colonel R. Wikimor, takes over at a time of evolving security challenges and opportunities. He is expected to consolidate existing gains, sustain operational tempo and further deepen civil military relations across the brigade’s area of responsibility.
