Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has inaugurated the four tier implementation committees for the Katsina One-Person-One-Tree KT1T Initiative, with a target of planting two million trees in 2026 and 11 million by 2030.
The Governor inaugurated the committees on Thursday at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina ahead of the statewide launch of the initiative scheduled for September 10, 2026.
Gov Radda said the initiative was designed to tackle desertification, climate change and environmental degradation while promoting a greener and more climate resilient Katsina.
He described environmental protection as a collective responsibility, stressing that the success of KT1T would depend not only on government efforts but also on individuals and communities taking ownership of the programme.
According to him, the initiative which forms part of the environmental component of his administration’s Building Your Future agenda would have direct implications for agriculture, livelihoods, public health and the general wellbeing of residents.
“This is not simply about distributing seedlings or organising tree planting ceremonies. We want trees that are planted, protected, nurtured and established,” Radda said.
The Governor explained that the implementation structure comprises a Central Steering Committee, three Zonal Monitoring Committees, 34 Local Government Supervisory Committees and 361 Ward Implementation Committees.
He charged members of the committees to ensure proper allocation, planting and monitoring of seedlings while urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, women, youths and other residents to actively participate in the initiative.
Radda particularly emphasised accountability at the ward level, noting that the real measure of success would be the survival and establishment of the trees long after the official planting ceremonies.
Earlier, the Special Adviser on Climate Change Prof. Alamin Mohammed described KT1T as a practical response to the environmental challenges facing the state. He said the programme would cover mobilisation, registration, seedling production and allocation, planting, monitoring and digital documentation.
The Katsina State ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Bakori Local Government Area Hon. Rabo Tambaya pledged the support of the 34 local government chairmen and 361 ward councillors, stressing that grassroots participation would be crucial to achieving the programme’s objectives.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs Hon. Bashir Tanimu assured that the ministry would collaborate with local government authorities to ensure effective implementation across the state.
Gov Radda directed all implementation teams to intensify preparations for the September 10 statewide launch, expressing optimism that KT1T would evolve from a government initiative into a people driven environmental movement across Katsina.
