Industrial peace has returned to Umaru Musa Yar’adua University UMYU Katsina, as the four in house staff unions have suspended their strike following successful negotiations with the committee set up by the Katsina State Government.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union NASU and the National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT agreed to call off the industrial action after the government committed to addressing the key issues that prompted the strike.
A major part of the agreement includes the suspension of the planned takeover of the university’s ICT portal by FlexiSaf Edusoft Limited. The government also approved appropriate salary structures for all categories of staff and pledged to resolve other policy related concerns raised by the unions.
In a statement jointly signed by the unions, the decision to suspend the strike followed the assurances contained in a Memorandum of Understanding MoU between both parties. The unions said the MoU clearly outlines the commitments of the state government and its readiness to implement the agreed terms without delay.
The unions expressed appreciation to the Visitor to the University, the Chancellor and the government’s committee for their roles in resolving the dispute. They also thanked students, parents and the public for their patience during the period of industrial action.
